Keeneland: Sun. scratches, etc.

Email

Saturday was one of those whirlwind, action-happy days at Keeneland, with a torrid wind and cold and occasional rain chasing everybody into a jam-packed grandstand and clubhouse. Meanwhile, things were even busier on the racetrack, with T.Albertrani and J.Rosario getting Mrs. Weber to the Derby with 19-1 Brilliant Speed, who needed every inch of the stretch to nail a tough-luck 24-1 Twinspired in a longshot-dominated 87th running of the G1 BGStakes. Three other stakes preceded, with TAPletcher winning with Stratford Hill and Aikenite, and C.Block continuing a terrific last year of luck on the Ky. circuit with Never Retreat in the G2 Jenny Wiley.

Thankfully, the weather will be much gentler today when a 9-race card is run, with the G2 Beaumont S. (race 8) pitting a pair of G1 winners, Tell a Kelly and Turbulent Descent. The sun and a much kinder breeze are out, and high temps are supposed to hit the mid-60s. Come on out if you've got the chance.

No carryover in the 50-cent pick 5 (races 5-9) after it was taken down for $7,831 per winning ticket yesterday on a pool of more than $180k, while the $1 super high 5 will not be offered on race 9 today because the field has been reduced to just 6 starters after scratches. There will be no SH5 carry when racing resumes here Wednesday. Speaking of the last race today, if you were wanting to see Calvin Borel in his meet debut, forget it. Calvin's lone mount of the day, Dubious Miss, has been scratched.

Fast Poly, yielding turf, first post 1:15. Today is the 8th of 15 spring programs, so it's the exact midpoint of the meet. We'll go dark for a couple days before picking back up Wednesday. A reminder that next Sunday (April 24) will be dark for the Easter holiday. The meet ends April 29.
