Keeneland: Pair of longshot first timers run one-two in race five

Email

Fredrik the Great, a first timer from the David Carroll stable, narrowly withstood a stretch rally from the similarly debuting Special Tree to win the fifth race for maiden $80,000 claimers under Tony Farina.

Enjoying the smoother trip of the two runners, the winner took command in midstretch, but looked in danger of being run down by Special Tree, who after being blocked in early stretch, had found running room on the inside.

But as the latter surged, the winner found a little more and refused to let his rival past, scoring by half a nose.

Being a 2-year-old son of Aptitude, whose offspring typically do best on turf, Fredrik the Great's future may come on grass.

As for Special Tree, he did everything but win, and showed courage to run so well when caught between horses for much of the race.

He is a Texas bred son of Special Rate, trained by Ed Frederick.
