Keeneland: early Thurs. results

It didn't take long for a huge payoff to be posted on the toteboard Thursday at Keeneland, as a dime super paid $1,958 in the opener when the 2 faves failed to hit the board. Sudden Interest (#1A, remaining p.o.e., $9.40) gave leading-trainer threat W.Catalano another win by wearing down Taino (7-1), while Artie Liam (73-1) and Mr Tiz (88-1) were 3rd and 4th to fill out the bomber super.

The 2nd was won on the front end by favored Halfway House ($4.80) for Silverton Hills Farm and Darrin Miller, the owner-trainer team of '07 Blue Grass winner Dominican. J.Castanon was up.

The 3rd went to Quartersawn (9-1), who pressed all the pace under V.Lebron to pull a mild upset over favored Tod the Destroyer.

The 4th went to the fave, Attempted Humor ($5), for the J.Velazquez-T.Pletcher juggernaut, with Lucky Memento up late as a logical (4-1) runner-up.

In general, the Poly continues to be extremely fast when producing swift clockings (2 track records by claimers last Sunday, remember) and it is clearly favoring horses on or near the lead.

Worth noting: G.Gomez took off Stream of Gold (#12) during the post parade of Race 4, after which the 9yo gelding proceeded to beat only a few stragglers when never a factor with V.Lebron up. Stream of Gold, an earner of $737k, has been on a downward spiral in recent times and was in for a mere $10k today.

Also, a notable rider change later: K.Desormeaux rides #9 Moneigh in race 7 for his brother, Keith.

There are 20 MTP for the 5th, a wide-open-looking MSW Beard Course race for 2yos, and Wilkinson (#5) and Rampaige (#9) are co-favored at 5-2 in a full field of 12.
