Keeneland: 30-1 Larry Zip wins at first asking in sixth race

Just when you thought a Wesley Ward-trained first timer couldn't lose race for 2-year-olds...it happened Wednesday in the sixth race at Keeneland.

Though the Ward-trained Isle of Skye spurted out to the early lead in the race, a 4 1/2-furlong dash for 2-year-olds, Isle of Skye could not sustain his speed in the final furlong, fading to finish in midpack.

This set up the closing rally of Larry Zip, a City Zip firster aptly owned and trained by Larry Lay that shot up the fence in an eye-catching performance to win going away over the Todd Pletcher-trained Smoke it Over. The winner ran the distance in 51.73 seconds under James Graham, lighting up the board with a $62.20 payoff.

Impressively, Larry Zip showed the ability to close up a narrow opening - something very few young babies are willing to do.

Irrespective of his 30-1 odds and the fact he cost just $2,000 as a yearling, his future is bright.
