Kauai Katie, Coil, Mizdirection, Etc.
By Dan Illman
KAUAI KATIE went back to doing what she does best in the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
Sent off the heavy 1-10 favorite in a short field, Kauai Katie tracked the quick early pace set by the previously undefeated COR COR, blew by that one at the quarter-pole, and scored by open lengths while geared down by John Velazquez. Following the failed experiment going two turns in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Kauai Katie seems primed to make a huge splash in graded sprints for sophomore fillies. The Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream on January 26 looks like a logical next step.
COIL closed out his career with a bang in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita on January 5. The winner of the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational going nine furlongs at three, and hero of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship at three-quarters of a mile last year, Coil's versatility was his main asset. He tracked the moderate pace set by a pretty good horse in ULTIMATE EAGLE and still ran that one down at 1 1/16 miles.
"He’ll go to Magali Farm (in Santa Ynez)," said Coil's trainer Bob Baffert. "He’s had some issues that I just didn’t want to run him this year. I’d have to run him sparingly. I think he deserves to be retired. He’s good; he’s very healthy right now, but it was time to send him to stud."
Ultimate Eagle continues to move forward for trainer Michael Pender. This was his second start following a long freshening and his potent early speed makes him a dangerous older runner capable of taking down major graded races this winter at Santa Anita.
Some, this handicapper included, questioned CALLED TO SERVE's will to win after he dropped yet another photo finish in the $83,000 Temperence Hill Stakes at Belmont on October 21, but the gelding had a difficult trip in that race and hasn't looked back since. After blowing favored WILLY BEAMIN off the track in the Grade 3 Discovery Handicap at Aqueduct on November 17, Called to Serve successfully tackled elders in the $105,000 Broad Brush Stakes at Laurel on New Year's Eve. Despite being confronted with a slow pace and a quality lone pacesetter in EIGHTTOFASTTOCATCH, Called to Serve gave a powerful stretch run, winning by almost six lengths with a 106 Beyer. After the Broad Brush, trainer Nick Canani indicated that he would choose from the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream, the Santa Anita Handicap or the Strub Stakes at Santa Anita for Called to Serve's next assignment.
MIZDIRECTION doesn't need much help, especially over the downhill turf course that she adores, but Mike Smith gave the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner a heady ride in her seasonal debut, the Grade 3 Monrovia Handicap at Santa Anita on January 6. With only one speed, second-choice KINDLE, in the field, Smith had to commit early and Mizdirection was up to the task, staying within striking distance before wearing down Kindle in the final strides.
Mike Repole and Todd Pletcher may look to catch lightning in a bottle yet again as they claimed JOHANNESBURG SMILE for $100,000 out of a victory at Aqueduct on January 4. Over the past five years, Pletcher and Repole are 5-17 (29%, $3.76 ROI) with horses firing first off the claim, including CAIXA ELETRONICA (claimed for $62,500, won over a million dollars alone in 2012), CALIBRACHOA (claimed for $50,000, won six stakes for Pletcher/Repole) and SENIORS PRIDE (taken for $50,000, won two of four for Pletcher/Repole including the $71,000 Bryan G Stakes at Aqueduct). Look for Johannesburg Smile next time at Aqueduct in either the Hollie Hughes Stakes on Febuary 18 or the Kings Point on February 23
Pletcher also sent out impressive first-time starter VERRAZANO at Gulfstream on New Year's Day. A More Than Ready half-brother to Grade 2 winner EL PADRINO, Verrazano earned a 94 Beyer and will likely stretch out sooner rather than later as he attempts to walk the Derby Trail.
GOLDENCENTS gave a workmanlike performance in taking a weak renewal of the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita. A top juvenile, Goldencents won't have any problems at distances up to 1 1/16 miles. How far he wants to go after 8 1/2 furlongs is still up for conjecture, however.
Nice training job by Michael Matz in getting HARD NOT TO LIKE fit for the Grade 3 Marshua's River Stakes following a long, injury-induced layoff. Sidelined since the Kentucky Oaks, reportedly due to knee surgery, Hard Not to Like wore down CHANNEL LADY to take the Marshua's River at 1 1/16 miles on grass.
Not exactly sure what his ultimate ceiling will be, but OMEGA STAR looms a 3-year-old to watch. A Cal-bred gelding, Omega Star was visually impressive in winning his second lifetime start at Santa Anita on New Year's Eve for trainer John Shirreffs. He's by Candy Ride and the second dam is multiple Grade 1 turf winner Alpride.

Dan , or anyone...
Are the Eclispe Awards being broadcast LIVE this year ? If so ...which channels and times ? I recall watching them on TVG , or ESPN something' in the past years.
The awards ceremony will take place on Jan. 19, 2013, at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. I would just love to see Michael Beychok LIVE when he accepts his award and makes his speech as Handicapper of the Year. The honor is given to the reigning NHC Champion.
The 42nd annual Eclipse Awards will be broadcast live from Gulfstream Park on HRTV and will be streamed live on drf.com.
Dan - With Jack Klugman's recent passing, I was wondering if you could post the PPs of his nice gray colt from the 80s, Jacklin Klugman, when you have a chance?
Thanks - Bob F.
JAKLIN KLUGMAN's lifetime past performances are available at the bottom of this blog post.
Hi Dan, I wonder if you might have any news as to the death of Canadian Champion Tu Endie Wei? Could not find any confirmation or details as to cause of death.
Please click on the link below for our report on TU ENDIE WEI's unfortunate passing:

I reserve the right to approve or deny any entries.
I know that there is a time issue for some of you, but let's remember why we began the HandiGambling races in the first place. The goal was to share ideas on why we like these horses, and why we're betting them the way we are. I'm not asking for a novel, but if you could spare a sentence or two outlining your handicapping angles, and thought processes about wagering, it would be appreciated.
REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE DECLARED THE WINNER OF THE HANDIGAMBLING EXERCISE, PLEASE CONTACT FORMBLOG@DRF.COM WITH YOUR DRF LOGIN AND PASSWORD IN ORDER TO ACCESS YOUR PRIZE PACKAGE.
ALSO, IF THE WINNER WOULD LIKE TO SELECT THE FOLLOWING WEEK'S RACE, PLEASE CONTACT FORMBLOG@DRF.COM NO LATE THAN THE FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY MORNING (A FRIDAY RACE IS MOST IDEAL).
Best of luck to all.

HG Oaklawn 5th Season Looks like a open race to me..Let's play the following to be different: I like #7 here. Price is right and the trainer/jockey combo is hot. The horse paided off at 50-1 for me before. I am looking for the Lukas entry to hold the rail for second... Play a $20 Tri #7 // #1 // #2, #3, #4, #5, #6. = $100 Thanks Dan and good luck to all. Whackymacky Out!!!.
HG The #3 (Endorsement) should be up front early, hoping not getting pushed to hard by other irrelevant early speed. Either way, should be enough speed for #2 (It happened again) and #7 (Win Willy) to run at. Lucas' coupled entry (#1's Skyring & Eye of the Leopard) are intriguing as both are switching from apparent preferred surface but, at least in the case of Skyring, looks to be coming into his own. Always wary of a Calhoun trained horse (#6, Donoharm), though that sprint to route number works against him. $5 SFC 2,3/2,3,7/1,2,3,7/1,2,3,6,7=$80 $2.50 SFC 2,3/2,3,7/2,3,7/1,6=$20 Total=$100 Barbero420
HG $50 TRI 2,7/2,7/1 Like many believe Endorsement , Win Willy and It happened again are the best 3 horses. Given that most combinations are taken already and that Endorsement will be a short price and is unproven off the layoff, I'll go with the other 2 and hope to get the Lukas entry up for the show. Rick
HG Oaklawn. $76.00 win #1. $2.00 exacta box 1-2-7. $2.00 trifecta box 1-2-7. Condolences to Terry Wallace on his recent loss, and good to see he is back handicapping on the Oaklawn website.
Grassland Hg 100 ex 3-2 #3. Class of the field, tactical speed #2. Likes OP, good connections
I'm short on time so this may well be a futile wager. Endorsement should wear down the other speed in here, and set It Happened Again up for a nice close. HG5thSeason wager: $100.00 ex 3/1 Biggar W
Ron Zuercher, Well, there's your Peruvian wonder MKB, FLY LEXIS FLY, going to be running in the San Fernando on Sat., with Peruvian native, Bejarano, up. Hmmm. Have they hatched a plan? :) Good luck! Annie
HG5thSeason Double Rah Rah gonna try to grab the lead on the rail while Skyring and Endorsement and Master Rick and Donoharm vie for that spot too. Stachys will inherit what is left after pace dissipates lighter weight assignment may help. Win Willy is able to make a late run as is Eye of the Leopard. It Happened Again could win with a repeat of recent effort at Fairgrounds. Giving Skyring a pass this time. HG wager: $50 P #2 $50 EX 5 w 2 Happy HandiGambling! . Anderson
HG Oaklawn $12 Super: 3/5/2,4,7,8/2,4,7,8 for $96 $4 W on 5 STUCKINARIZONA
HG I miscalculated again, I will change my amount bet to make my total 100 . $3 super 3/6/2,5,7/2,5,7 for 18 $2 super 3/2,5,6,7 for $48 $2 super 3/6,7/2,5,6,7/2,5,6,7 for $24 $5 super 5362 $5 super 3562
