Hollywood: Tough loss for 'Caroline'

Email

Mighty Caroline ran too well to lose Saturday's $100,000 Landaluce Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.

Leading by two lengths with a furlong remaining in the six-furlong race, 17-1 Mighty Caroline was caught at the wire by 2-1 second choice Killer Graces, who won her second stakes for the division in the Landaluce. Mighty Caroline had already passed even-money favorite Woebegon in the first furlong to take the lead, but could not hold off Killer Graces.

At Del Mar, Mighty Caroline can start in two stakes - the $150,000 Sorrento Stakes over 6 1-2 furlongs on Aug. 5 and the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante over seven furlongs on Sept. 3. Both races are likely on Killer Graces's agenda, and should suit her since she was running on best at the finish of the Landaluce.

To win such races, Mighty Caroline has to conserve some of her speed. Mihty Caroline disputed the lead in her career debut, a maiden race win by a nose on June 12. She was eager to be in front in the Landaluce, setting a pace of 21.94 and 45.03 seconds.
