Hollywood: Speeler is horse to watch

The New Zealand import Speeler finished fourth in his U.S. debut in an allowance race for fillies and mares over five furlongs on turf in Sunday's sixth race, but was running well in the final furlong, finishing 2 3-4 lengths behind race winner Salty Sarah ($9.80).

Trained by Terry Knight, Speeler was making her first start since winning a maiden race in New Zealand in August. The way she finished in the final furlong, a a strong gallop out, suggests that Speeler could be effective in an allowance race on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita this winter.

Holloween Candy finished second to Salty Sarah, a loss that eneded a two-race win streak. Claimed for $25,000 from a maiden race at Del Mar on July 22, Holloween Candy had won an allowance race on Oct. 9 and a $50,000 claimer on Oct. 23, in her last two starts. She was entered for a $40,000 claiming price in Sunday's race and was taken in a two-way shake by Doug O'Neill.
