Hollywood: Sharp win for Nereid

Nereid, making her debut against winners, scored an impressive victory in a one-mile allowance race on turf, drawing off in the final furlong to win by 1 1-2 lengths over Wallstreeter. Ridden by Joe Talamo, Nereid ($8) was timed in 1:35.25. Trained by John Shirreffs, Nereid, a 3-year-old filly, won a maiden race over 1 1-16 miles on May 7, by a nose.

Nereid was wide for much of Thursday's race, stalking pacesetter Warren's Flyer. In early stretch, Warren's Flyer faded from contention and then struck the rail but did not appear to be injured in the brief incident.

The disappointment in the field of 3-year-old fillies was So Belle, who was third in the Grade 2 Providencia Stakes at Santa Anita in April. Sent off as the 3-2 favorite, So Belle failed to quicken in the stretch and finished sixth.

Nereid won the final leg of a 50-cent pick five that paid $439. The winners of the first four races were The Whammer ($5), Lemon Drop Ridge ($13.60), Heleonor Rugby ($6.80) and Gator Warrior ($4).
