Hollywood: Romeo Royale fights back

Romeo Royale led for much of a one-mile turf race on Sunday, lost his advantage  briefly in the stretch and then fought back along the inside to prevail by a head in a maiden race.

Ridden by Christian Santiago Reyes, Romeo Royale ($22.60) won by a nose over Lemou, who rallied from off the pace to lead by about a head in the stretch. Guest Star, the 8-5 favorite, closed from last in a field of seven to finish a half-length behind Lemou.

The maiden win was a lucrative result for the partnership that owns Romeo Royale, a group that includes trainer Gary Stute. The victory was worth $39,000 from the purse, plus an additional $20,000 to be paid later as a California-bred winning a maiden special weight race.

Romeo Royale, 4, had lost his first four starts, includig two fifth-place finishes in April at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park.
