Hollywood: Red Sun fights back

Email

Red Sun, making his first start in 54 weeks, fought back in the stretch after losing the lead to win a top-class allowance race over a mile on turf by a neck over 15-1 Victory Pete in Sunday's eighth race.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, his third win of the day, Red Sun led by a half-length over even-money favorite Compari through early fractions of 23.19 and 46.11 seconds. Red Sun, racing on the inside, gave up his lead by a head with a furlong remaining but came back to retake the lead and hold off Victory Pete, who closed from sixth to just miss.

Victory Pete finished a nose in front of Smokey Lonesome, who was a head in front of Compari. Compari was only beaten a half-length. Trained by Carla Gaines, Red Sun ran a mile on turf in 1:34.26 and paid $13.20.

Owned by Harris Farms, which co-owns Compari, Red Sun has won 5 of 7 starts. He had started in one stakes, finishing third in the Grade 2 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate Fields in April 2010, his final start before layoff.
