Hollywood: Pedersen claims winner

Church Avenue, a relatively easy winner of Thursday's sixth race, was claimed for $20,000 by Dean Pedersen. The 5-year-old mare ran 7 1-2 furlongs in 1:30.37, finishing 1 3-4 lengths in front of Dave's Revenge as the 6-5 favorite.

Church Avenue led throughout and was never seriously threatened. She previously raced for La Canada Stable and trainer Jack Carava.

Dave's Revenge has had an interesting meeting. The 5-year-old mare was ruled a non-starter on May 15 when she acted up before the start and was being reloaded when an assistant starter pushed the button to open the gates. At the time, starter Gary Brinson was behind the gates, assisting other members of his team in getting Dave's Revenge into the gate.

The incident caused three complaints to be issued against Brinson by the California Horse Racing Board. A hearing was held before the Hollywood Park stewards last Sunday, and the complaints were dismissed after a 45-minute hearing.

Dave's Revenge showed no ill manners on Thursday. She broke well and was second for most of the race, finishing clear of third-place finisher Tripped The Light.
