Hollywood Park: Mixed signals from Scenic Blast

Scenic Blast, the three-time Group 1 winner in Australia and England last year, could only finish fourth in the Rober Kerlan Handicap over six furlongs on turf on Sunday, but did run well late to finish two lengths behind race winner My Summer Slew.

The Kerlan was Scenic Blast's first start since he finished last of 14 in the $1.5 million Hong Kong Sprint last December. He bled in that race, the third consecutive race in which he finished badly tailed off and at the back of the field.

After the Kerlan, trainer John Shirreffs said that Scenic Blast, who has never run beyond a mile, could be tried at longer distances at Del Mar. At 3 in 2007, Scenic Blast was second in the Caulfied Guineas Stakes over about a mile, his only appearance at the distance.
