Hollywood Park: Harmonious beats the World

Harmonious won her third consecutive race, and first stakes, in Saturday's Grade 1 American Oaks, taking advantage of a field weakened by the absence of continental and international shippers compared to previous years, and a leading rival who was scratched the day before the race.

While the 2010 American Oaks may not have been as glamorous as past runnings, Harmonious is certainly a filly going in the right direction. She has won three consecutive turf starts at a mile, 1 1-8 miles and 1 1-4 miles in the American Oaks for trainer John Shirreffs and Marty Wygod's family.

Harmonious would have had a much tougher time in Saturday's race if Cozi Rosie had stayed in the field, but there was concern about her soundness on Friday, leading to her withdrawal. That meant Harmonious was sent off as the 5-2 third choice. She needed a career-best effort to beat Antares World, a two-time stakes winner from Northern California.

Antares World was part of a speed duel with Riviera Chic - fractions of 23.46 and 47.26 seconds - shook off that rival and was only beaten 1 1-4 lengths after leadng by a half-length over the winner with a furlong remaining. The Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on Aug. 21 may offer a rematch for he first two finishers.
