Hollywood Park: Another solo pick six

A $144 upset by Day With Desi in race 4, and an off-the-board finish by odds-on Lions Story in race 7, made the pick six difficult to hit Thursday at Hollywood Park.

But once again, the sequence was not impossible. For the sixth time in the first 10 days of the meet, the pick six pool produced one winning ticket. The payoff Thursday was $63,915.

A quick review of the Thursday highlights:

The race-2 showdown between Grade 1 winners M One Rifle and Cost of Freedom never materialized. Odds-on favorite M One Rifle hopped at the break and was away last, which allowed Cost of Freedom to make an easy lead. He won by four and one-half lengths while racing the fastest six furlongs of the meet, 1:08.36. M One Rifle finished a distant third in a throw-out race.

The knock on Cost of Freedom is how quickly he pulled up after the wire under Tyler Baze. He came to a dead stop a furlong and one-half past the finish. John Sadler trains the winner.

In race 4, stretch-out sprinter Day With Desi took the lead at 71-1 and led wire to wire under Kerwin John. He won the $12,500 restricted claiming race by a neck, giving John his first Hollywood winner since June 18, 2008.

In race 7, Lions Story got hammered to 4-5 in a five-horse field of 3-year-old allowance sprinters, but he failed to reach contention and finished fourth. Lions Story had $29,912 wagered on him to show from a pool of $41,842. His off-the-board finish created inordinately high show payoffs on the first three finishers.

Ukandoit, the gate-to-wire winner in 1:09.36, paid $5.40 to win and $4.80 to show. Runner-up Just Magic paid $12.20 to show, and third-place finisher Mesa Thunder returned $15.40 to show.
