Hollywood: Malibu Pier romps

Email

Malibu Pier made a successful debut on synthetic tracks in Sunday's third race, benefiting from a perfect trip from jockey Rafael Bejarano to win an optional claimer over 1 1-16 miles by 4 3-4 lengths over pacesetter Calle Vista. Trained by Carla Gaines, Malibu Pier ($4) was timed in 1:43.44.

Calle Vista set the pace, hounded by the outsider Rule the Storm. Turning for home, Malibu Pier moved closer and quickly took command. The 3-year-old filly has won 3 of 4 starts. Her only loss was a fourth in the Grade 3 Harold Ramser Handicap here last month.

The win on Sunday suggests that Gaines and owner B. Wayne Hughes will consider Malibu Pier for the La Canada Stakes series for 4-year-old fillies at Santa Anita this winter.

It's been a very formful start on Sunday. Favorites have won the first three races - King of California ($3.80), Stephen's Got Hope ($3.20) and Malibu Pier, resulting in a $1 early pick 3 that returned just $6.40.
