Hollywood: A late double for Puype

Email

Trainer Mike Puype won the last two races on Saturday, the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes with the exciting Turbulent Descent, who paid $4.20, and a six-furlong maiden race for statebred 2-year-old fillies with Kalyra Cat ($19.20). The $2 Puype-trained double returned $46.40.

Turbulent Descent will be at the fore of the Kentucky Oaks buildup in California following her win in the Starlet, her first race around 1 1-16 miles. There was considerable hype surrounding Turbulent Descent going into the Starlet, and her performance lived up to expectations.

Ridden by David Flores, she handled the move from sprints without difficulty, stalking the pace to the turn and winning by 1 1-4 lengths.

Kalrya Cat was a bigger surprise. The filly had been third and fourth in starts here earlier this fall, and rallied through the final furlong to catch the first-time starter Shred the Secrets by a neck in 1:11.57.
