Hollywood: 'Dubawi' reaches a new height

The promise that Dubawi Heights displayed as a 2-year-old filly in England in 2009 was on display on Saturday when she won the first stakes of her career in the Grade 3 Wilshire Handicap.

Given an ideal ride by jockey Joel Rosario, Dubawi Heights ($9) stalked the pace to the final furlong and won by 1 1-2 lengths over Lilly Fa Pootz. The Wilshire Handicap was Dubawi Heights's third consecutive win, preceded by a maiden race here last November and an allowance race at Santa Anita on April 1.

At 2, Dubawi Heights was second in two lucrative sale progeny races for fillies that drew fields of 27 and 14. The first of those races, the Watership Down Stud Sales race at Ascot, drew a field of 27. Dubawi Heights was beaten a half-length in that field when ridden by Frankie Dettori.

Trained by Simon Callaghan, Dubawi Heights arrived in the United States in late 2009 but battled illness and injury before finally winning a maiden race in her third American start last November. Her form has improved with each race, leading to Saturday's Wilshire.
