Hollywood: Candrea wins debut

Candrea, purchased for a whopping $340,000 at the Ocala Breeders Sale of 2-year-olds in-training in March, won her debut with little urging in Thursday's sixth race.

The style of the win, by 3 1-2 lengths over the first-time starter Made to Love Her, suggests that Candrea will play an important role in stakes for 2-year-old fillies later this summer.

Ridden by Martin Garcia, Candrea was third or fourth until the top of the stretch, while racing on the inside. Space on the inside opened up in early stretch and Candrea responded to take the lead before drawing off under a hand-ride. She finished 5 1-2 furlongs in 1:04.20.

The win impressed Mike Marlow, trainer Bob Baffert's assistant, with the way that Candrea was patient on the inside, with horses in front and aside of her. "She handled it like she'd done it 10 times," Marlow said. "She was inside the whole way and had a lot of things going against her."

Candrea is by Trippi and is owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman.
