Hollywood: Burns, by a nose

Burns, who had been fourth or fifth in his last three starts, edged even-money favorite Cloud Man in an optional claimer over 1 1-16 miles on turf in Saturday's seventh race, a result that could lead to a start in the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar on July 20, trainer Barry Abrams said.

Burns ($15.40) was ridden for the first time by Patrick Valenzuela, and rallied from off the pace to outduel Cloud Man. Burns ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:41.32, winning by a nose.

Abrams won for just the second time with 42 starters at the meeting.

Burns, by Unusual Heat, was a troubled fifth in the Snow Chief Stakes here in April and fourth in the Alydar Stakes and an optional claimer in May. He won an allowance race for state-breds at Santa Anitta in April over a mile on turf, the same distance as the Oceanside Stakes.
