Hollywood: Brigand wins debut

Email

Brigand, the $925,000 sale topper at the Ocala Breeders Sales selected 2-year-olds in-training sale in March, won his debut in Sunday's sixth race, but was fully extended to hold off a late threat from 36-1 Cloud Hopper.

Brigand ($3.80) won by a nose, running 5 1-2 furlongs in 1:04.94. Ridden by Martin Garcia, Brigand raced wide and close to the pace on the backstretch, dueled with Basmati on the turn and in early stretch while two-wide, and held off Cloud Hopper in deepp stretch. Basmati held third. Truco Latino, who was second in the Willard Proctor Memorial Stakes on June 12, did not finish. He bolted on the turn and was eased in early stretch.

Brigand races for Kaleem Shah and is trained by Bob Baffert.
