Hollywood: Blue Chagall flies

Email

Blue Chagall ($4.80) won his third minor stakes in the last 13 months in Friday's Riot in Paris Stakes, storming home wide to win the one-mile turf race by 1 3-4 lengths over the English shipper Averoo. Muny, who was part of the early pace, could only finish third in the field of six.

Trained by Julio Canani, Blue Chagall, sent off favored, won the restricted Lure Stakes at Santa Anita in October 2009 and the Wickerr Handicap at Del Mar in July, but was sixth in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile here on Oct. 9.

The win on Friday could inspire Canani to start Blue Chagall in the $250,000 Citation Handicap over 1 1-16 miles on turf on Nov. 27.

Averoo may be a horse to watch. The six-time winner has not exhausted all of his conditions in allowance races, having won several races with small purses in England. It appears as if he is eligible for a "non-winners of two other than", an allowance race that would fill on turf more often than a race on the main track.
