Hollywood: Baffert beats Baffert

Stablemates Smash and Hoorayforhollywood finished a nose apart in an optional claimer over 6 1-2 furlongs in Sunday's third race. Bob Baffert trains the first two finishers.

Smash, the beneficiary of a perfect trip under jockey Martin Garcia, stalkled a quick pace of 22.61 and 45.52 seconds and caught Hoorayforhollywood in the final strides, finishing in 1:15.64. "I hate running against myself," Baffert said.

The margin was officially a nose but it looked more like a short head on the photo.

Smash ($3) drew $53,872 of the $70,624 bet to show, resulting in a miniscule show payoff of $2.10. A colt by Smart Strike, Smash has won 2 of 3 starts, winning his debut against maidens last July but missing all of the important races for 2-year-olds in the second half of 2010 and the first five months of this year because of injury. Smash was second to stablemate Coil in an allowance race here on May 6, his 3--year-old debut.

Leaving the winner's circle, Baffert said that Smash would make his next start in a stakes, but walked away before stating what race that might be.
