Hollywood: Apprentice Flores wins first Thoroughbred race

Jockey Eswan Flores, 18, won his first Thoroughbred race aboard Kelly Leak ($33.60) in Monday's fourth race, the first leg of the pick six.

Flores, who has ridden Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos in recent months, guided Kelly Leak to a one-length win in the $32,000 claimer over six furlongs on turf. He was met after the race with the typical hi-jinx from fellow riders, a cold bucket of water and a shaving cream pie when preparing for a television interview.

Flores began riding Thoroughbreds last Friday.

Kelly Leak is best known as the winner of the 2009 Sunland Park Derby, a race in which eventual Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird finsihed fourth.

Kelly Leak won the first leg of a pick six that drew a pool of $192,940.
