Temple's Door, a 3-year-old making his first start against winners, had little difficulty winning an optional claimer over 1 1-4 miles on turf in Thursday's seventh race, outfinishing pacesetter Porfido in the stretch.

Ridden by Chantal Sutherland, Temple's Door ($4) stalked the 9-year-old Porfido for the first seven furlongs, moved into contention two-wide on the turn and kicked clear in the final furlong to win by 1 1-4 lengths in 2:01.25. Porfido, who won two derbys in Chile in 2005 and 2006 and has since placed in five American graded stakes for turf marathoners, held second in the field of six but lost his 19th consecutive race.

Temple's Door is trained by Carla Gaines. A colt by Leroidesanimaux, Temple's Door won a $50,000 claiming race on turf for maidens at Santa Anita on March 31 in his career debut. Gaines was left impressed by Temple's Door's poise in Thursday's race, considering it was his first start beyond a mile, and first race against winners.

Later this spring or in early summer, Temple's Door will start in a stakes against 3-year-olds.
