Willa B Awesome ($5.60) won the first 2-year-old maiden race around a turn in Southern California in Thursday's third race, and gave stallion Awesome Gambler his first winner.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Willa B Awesome ran 4 1-2 furlongs in 53.20 seconds, finishing 2 1-2 lengths in front of Remember to Yodel in the field of seven.

The maiden race was the first leg of a pick six that drew a pool of just $98,021. Pick six pools at Southern California tracks almost never drop below $100,000, and can be as high as $150,000 on weekdays without a carryover. However, Thursday was the first day of a newly-created 50-cent pick 5, which began in the first race and attracted a pool of $103,291.

Willa B Awesome is trained by Walther Solis, who has won 2 of the first 3 races at the meeting.
