Hawthorne: Main track fast, turf still to come

Email

Feels like summer. Sunny, 79, light west/northwest wind.
Fast and firm.

Fastest main track of the young meet.

Race 1, $14K f & m claimers, winner Runningatem went six furlongs in 1:11.93. Race 2, Illinois 2yo MSWs, winner Luck With a Kiss went six furlongs in 1:11.02. A first-timer bet to 7-2 for trainer Mike Reavis, Luck With a Kiss, a son of Trust N Luck, overpowered this group. Runner-up Domain's Rap, a Scott Becker firster, was four behind the winner, but almost five in front of third-place Dance for Paco. Race 3, $7.5K claimers, went in 1:10.60 or so, with near dead-heat between Aspire to Succeed and Jake's Soldier. Like I said, fastest main track so far this meet, but no bias that I can perceive.

Featured Hawthorne Derby is race 8, and race 5 is the only turf race before the stakes. I expect times to be fast on this firm, sun-baked course.
