Hawthorne: Ill Derby Day first notice

It's about 52 degrees here at Hawthorne. Rain till after noon, but half hour before 1:35 post time the skies cleared, and we're sunny now. Thought we were headed for 'good' track come Illinois Derby post, but the surface started out 'good' for race 1, and was upgraded to 'fast' for race 2. Think that designation is accurate.

We'll see how the track surface evolves, but one thing we know: It's windy. South/southwest wind blowing across the track and into the horses in the stretch run. You'll see fast fractions down the backstretch, slow finishing times.

So far, no bias, with pace-presser Oughta Be Mine grinding out a race 1 win, three-wide closer Keys to Anna taking race 2, and four-wide closer Wayoff home in race 3.
