Gulfstream: Wrong, but right

It's nice to be wrong, yet still get it right. Surely the majority of GP horseplayers - including the on-air TV folks, Ron Nicoletti and Jessica Pacheco, who said as much - backing Mending Hearts in the 7th race Friday were looking for the Street Cry filly to make a winning move from the back in the one-mile MSW race. After all, she had lagged well behind in her previous 2 starts for trainer Marty Wolfson before showing late interest.

So what'd she do? Pretty much beat the gate and shook off all comers in winning gate-to-wire under Paco Lopez. She was the 7-2 second choice in a race in which the TAP firster, R Gypsy Gold, was a good 2nd at 15-1, while a 99-1 shot, Mae Ruler, outnodded part of the favored 6-5 Will Farish entry to blow up the trifecta at a $2,373 payoff for $1.

In earlier races, Kitten's Caregiver ($32.80) showed newfound speed in surprising the 4th race, giving trainer W.Ward his 2nd win of the day; Ink ($6.40) came through as the fave after getting a great trip under J.Castanon to take the 5th; and In Perpetuity ($8.40) barely held off the onrushing Sweet N Sour Nina to take the 6th.

There are 12 MTP for the 8th, the first meaningful 3yo race of the year, a 1X one-turn-mile, and if the Double and Pick 3 probables mean anything, Black N Beauty (#1), Shadow Warrior (#9), and El Grayling (#10) all will be sent away in the 5-2 range.
