Gulfstream: Sunday scratches, etc.

Email

It's going to be another nice, mild afternoon in SoFla, with mostly sunny skies and the high temp to reach the mid-70s for the first Sunday card of the 2011 Gulfstream meet. There were a couple of upsets in varying degrees in stakes action here yesterday, with 14-1 Determinato taking the Spec Bid, followed by odds-on Morning Line going down to defeat to 2-1 Soaring Empire in the Hal's Hope. The twin turf stakes today are the Ft. Lauderdale (race 8) and the Marshua's River (race 9), and both shape up as great wagering events.

No carryover today in the immediately popular 50-cent pick 5 (races 6-10), which drew nearly $140k in handle yesterday (winning tix came back $6,806), and that's even without a carry. There is a $16,517 carry in the 10-cent pick 6 (races 5-10), which has grown very slowly since opening day; there have been reports that part of the sluggish handle is because some software used by the various tote providers cannot handle that increment for the pick 6. Overall, though, handle has been terrific so far this meet, with the all-sources on the 10-race Saturday card being nearly $9.8 million.
