Gulfstream: Sat. scratches; no pick 5 carry

The weather is OK, mostly sunny, for this first Saturday card of 2011 at Gulfstream, with highs expected to reach the high 60s. We have 2 stakes today: the Spec Bid (race 7) for 3yo sprinters and the Hal's Hope (race 9) for older horses, with Morning Line likely to be favored over the come-backing Rule.

One thing that really stands out about the first 3 days is that the 50-cent pick 5 has really been a hit. The new wager (races 6-10 today) drew nearly $74k yesterday,  and that was even without a carryover; it drew nearly $124k Thursday when there was a $35k carryover. Clearly it's something the fans like.

Also worthy of note is that speed really seemed to be favored over the main track yesterday, something that winning trainer Dale Romans alluded to after he sent out Black N Beauty to a front-running win in the featured 8th. "It did seem like there was a speed bias that helped us along," said Romans.
