Gulfstream: early Fri. report

Speed dominated the first 3 races here Friday, all of them main-track sprints. A 13-1 upset by Capitalism At Risk (#4, O.Bocachica) in the 1st race was followed by a 4-5 victory by Mine N Gems (#8, E.Trujillo) in the 2nd. In the 3rd, Feel That Fire (#2, E.Trujillo again, 7-2) broke sharpest to make all the pace in prevailing for a 1X condition among 7 fillies and mares.

Interestingly, in both the 1st and 3rd races, it looked like the high-percentage owner-trainer team of F.Calabrese/N.Canani were dead winners at the eighth pole. But Just Plain Wayne was turned back by Capitalism At Risk, just like Sleetcalling was repulsed by Feel That Fire; in both instances, the Calabrese horses may have poked their heads in front, only to fail to follow through.

Mine N Gems, by the way, had been away for nearly a year was being dropped in for a $10k tag by trainer W.Ward, who now has the lead atop the trainer standings with 3 wins. The 4yo gelding was claimed by Steve Klesaris.

One scratch we neglected to report earlier: In race 5, the morning line favorite, #6 Smart Maneuver, is out.

There are 20 MTP for the 4th, and Perjury (#7, R.Maragh) is the 8-5 fave among 9 3yo maiden-claimers.
