Fornatale: Two online qualifiers Sunday

Email

The races have been announced for the two contests in the Daily Racing Form tournament universe Sunday. There are separate one-day events on NHCQualify.com and DRFQualify.com.

NHC Tour action continues on NHCQualify.com, where players can buy in for $165 and compete for up to five spots for the National Handicapping Championship, to be held in Las Vegas at Treasure Island next January. This year’s NHC offered $2.3 million in prize money, and early indications suggest that that number might increase in 2016.

Another reason to play on NHCQualify.com is for the Tour points on offer Sunday. While this year has featured a terrific battle on the lead so far between Jonathon Kinchen and Roger Cettina, there are other interesting races in the standings as well. This year, the top 20 finishers will compete in a contest-within-a-contest at the NHC, where the winner will receive a cash bonus and a seat to the 2017 NHC.

Additionally, the top 150 finishers on the Tour will once again receive automatic berths to the NHC, if they haven’t already secured direct qualification. Five of the 10 players at last year’s final table secured NHC qualification by this method.

Also on Sunday, players have a final opportunity to win into the following weekend’s Santa Anita Betting Challenge, a two-day, live-bankroll handicapping contest held at the Great Race Place. Buy-in on DRFQualify.com is just $80, and as many as four players can win their $3,500 buy-ins for Santa Anita, plus a $500 travel allowance.

Here are the races for both contests:
4:30 Gulfstream 9
5:00 Gulfstream 10
5:00 Santa Anita 4
5:14 Oaklawn 7
5:22 Fair Grounds 7
5:30 Gulfstream 11
5:30 Santa Anita 5
5:42 Oaklawn 8
6:00 Gulfstream 12
6:10 Oaklawn 9
6:22 Fair Grounds 9
6:30 Santa Anita 7

It’s a mix of low- and midlevel claimers and allowance claimers that spans four tracks. Nine of the 12 races have 10 or more horses, so the field sizes are pretty strong for a mellow Sunday. Five of the races will be contested on grass. The whole 12-race sequence is scheduled to last just over two hours, and the spacing is generally good, with the notable exception of Santa Anita and Gulfstream, whose races for whatever reason are scheduled to go off at the same time. As always, it’s a good idea to put in default picks early to avoid getting shut out.
