Fornatale: Three online contests Sunday

There are three online tournaments happening in the DRF contest universe Sunday. The first marks the return of contests to DRFBets.com.

"We're excited to offer one of the last NHC qualifying events of the year, exclusively for our members and partners,” DRFBets vice president Phil Trowler said. “We aim to deliver an even more robust contest schedule in 2015 as part of our commitment to offering the complete wagering experience to DRF players."

In Sunday’s contest, which is open to DRFBets and Xpressbet players, contestants must simply make eight $10 win bets, one per race, at the following tracks: Aqueduct, Gulfstream, and Santa Anita. There are no mandatory races, so in addition to picking the winners, players will be tested on their ability to pick the right races. Given the frosty weather in New York, players should be advised that there is some chance that Aqueduct will cancel, so they should plan accordingly.

The two players with the highest totals at the end of the contest will win seats and travel accommodations to the National Handicapping Championship, the world’s most prestigious handicapping contest, to be held Jan. 23-25 at Treasure Island in Las Vegas. The third through 10th finishers will receive wagering credits as follows: $500 to third, $300 to fourth, $200 to fifth, and $100 to sixth through 10th.

The bankroll is fixed, meaning you can bet $10 and $10 only for each bet, but the bets and money are real. This means players will keep the money earned from their bets during the contest, whether or not they finish in the money.

There is no additional entry fee, but players must have a $50 NHC Tour membership for 2014 to be eligible for the prizes. You can sign up at http://www.drf.com/store/last-chance-challenge.

Over on BCQualify.com, there will be the second of three opportunities this month to move through to the Round 2 qualifier next Sunday for the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge. Last weekend, 25 players advanced. This weekend, the top 10 percent of finishers will join them. Entries cost $110. The third Round 1 contest will be held next Saturday, the day before Round 2. To purchase entries, go to https://www.bcqualify.com/buy_advanced.aspx.

On the same set of races, DRFQualify.com will host its inaugural qualifier for the $100,000 Santa Anita Betting Challenge, to be held March 14-15 at Santa Anita Park. Players will put up $80 in hopes of winning their full $3,500 entries plus travel allowances. Two to four seats will be awarded, depending on participation. Sign up at https://www.drfqualify.com/buy_advanced.aspx.

Here are the races for both contests:
3:05 Gulfstream 6
3:30 Santa Anita 1
3:34 Gulfstream 7
3:56 Tampa Bay 8
4:00 Santa Anita 2
4:25 Tampa Bay 9
4:30 Santa Anita 3
4:32 Gulfstream 9
4:55 Tampa Bay 10
5:01 Gulfstream 10
5:30 Santa Anita 5
6:00 Santa Anita 6

The sequence is heavy on Santa Anita, which is logical since it’s being used as a qualifier for the Santa Anita Betting Challenge. There are no stakes races, but it’s a competitive card of midlevel claimers and optional claimers with seven turf events. Several of the scheduled post times are very close together, so make sure you put in default picks so you don’t get shut out.
