Fornatale: Sovereign Stable offers exciting prize to lucky NHC Tour member

As thrilling as it is to win a handicapping contest, there is no excitement in racing like cheering on a horse you own.

Last week, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association announced a new opportunity for National Handicapping Championship Tour members. Ownership syndicate and NHC sponsor Sovereign Stable will be awarding an interest in one of its 2-year-old prospects in a drawing open exclusively to NHC Tour members. The winner will own 2 percent of a Sovereign horse targeted to debut at the upcoming Saratoga Race Course meet and will receive 2 percent of that horse’s net earnings throughout its career. Registration continues through 2 p.m. Eastern on July 15, and the drawing will take place on July 17, a day before the Saratoga meeting starts.

“We are delighted to offer this unique ownership opportunity exclusively to NHC Tour members,” said Matt Gatsas, managing partner of Sovereign Stable and a longtime supporter of tournament play. “In addition to the grand prize, we will hold drawings throughout July and August to win special experiences with the Sovereign ownership team at Saratoga.”

Additional prizes include 10 paid NHC Tour memberships for 2015, Sovereign Stable merchandise and invitation-only morning experiences on the Saratoga backstretch. Sovereign Stable is a horse racing management company whose goal is to provide an affordable entry point into the highest levels of Thoroughbred racing. Past Sovereign standouts include Grade 1 winner Negligee and 10 other stakes winners. Its current trainers are John Terranova and George Weaver.

Entry for the drawing is not automatic for current Tour members. Registered NHC Tour members can enter the contest at https://www.formstack.com/forms/ntra-nhcsovereign. The winner will never incur any out-of-pocket expenses and needs only to complete an owner profile, sign an LLC operating agreement with Sovereign Stable, and obtain an owner's license in any appropriate states (all paid by Sovereign Stable).

If you’re not currently a Tour member but would like to be eligible for the drawing and to compete for a place in the 2015 National Handicapping Championship, you can sign up today. Becoming a tour member requires a membership fee of $50, which is valid for the calendar year.

What else do you get for joining the Tour? The top 150 NHC Tour points leaders at the end of the year will be guaranteed entry into the 2015 NHC, and the overall, season-ending NHC Tour points leader will win $75,000 and be eligible for a $2 million bonus should he or she capture the 2015 NHC. Because the final NHC Tour winner is determined on the basis of one's six best overall scores throughout the year, it is still very possible for a new player signing up to win these prizes. Plus, you can’t qualify for the NHC without being an NHC Tour member.

The 16th Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship will be held Jan. 23-25, 2015, at Treasure Island in Las Vegas. The NHC will offer a record $2 million-estimated purse and at least $750,000 to the winner, along with an Eclipse Award as the Handicapper of the Year.
