Fornatale: Live-bankroll event at Los Alamitos

If you want to qualify for the National Handicapping Championship and you happen to be anywhere near Los Alamitos on Saturday, consider checking out its second real-money, live-bankroll tournament. Entries, which are limited to two per person, are $300 each – $200 will be placed in the contest prize pool, and players will use the remaining $100 to make bets, keeping whatever money they have earned at the end of the contest.

The permitted wagers are win, place, show, and exactas only. This is an unusual rule for a live-bankroll event, but it’s also kind of cool. It prevents you from having a great day and being in the lead going into the last race, only to have someone hit a cold trifecta and knock you out of a potential NHC spot.

The scope of the contest is limited as well. The tournament covers all live races at Los Alamitos on Saturday. Each entry must wager at least $20 per race on five races. This tight focus will appeal to players looking to handicap a limited number of races and allows players to go a bit deeper in their handicapping than in an event that includes numerous tracks.

The top two finishers will receive seats to the NHC in Las Vegas. The prize pool will be paid down to fifth place, with the winner getting half of the total. The rest of the pool pays out as follows: 20 percent to second, 15 percent to third, 10 percent to fourth, and 5 percent to fifth.

** On Saturday, BCQualify.com will host the third and final Round 1 contest for September’s two-stage format. Players finishing in the top 10 percent will advance to the Round 2 event next Saturday, Sept. 27. The top seven or eight finishers there (depending on participation) will receive full $10,000 buy-ins, plus a travel allowance, to the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge at Santa Anita on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

2:54 Parx 8 (1 mile 70 yards, dirt, allowance)
3:09 Belmont 5 (1 mile, turf, claimer)
3:25 Parx 9 (1 1/16 miles, turf, stakes)
3:41 Belmont 6 (1 1/16 miles, turf, MSW)

5:27 Churchill 10 (6 1/2 furlongs, dirt, claimer)
