Fornatale: Last chance to qualify for Santa Anita event

On Sunday, DRFQualify.com is offering the final opportunity for players to qualify for the Santa Anita Autumn Championship, to be held next Saturday and Sunday at Santa Anita Park. The buy-in for Sunday’s qualifier is $125, and up to two $4,000 seats will be awarded.

The Santa Anita contest will be one of the final chances for players to qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge, and the prize pool likely will lean toward BCBC seats. Of the $4,000 buy-in, $1,000 will go to the prize pool, and $3,000 will act as a live bankroll to be bet on Santa Anita races next weekend in the win, place, show, exacta, and trifecta pools.

Also on Sunday, the NHC Tour returns to NHCQualify.com. The buy-in for that contest is $165, and up to four seats to the world’s premier handicapping contest, the National Handicapping Championship, will be on offer. Qualifiers also will receive $500 for travel expenses and a four-night stay at Treasure Island in Las Vegas, the host site for the 2016 NHC.

Here are the races for Sunday’s qualifiers:

3:40 Belmont 6
3:51 Keeneland 6

There are four maiden races in the sequence, including interesting maiden special weights at Keeneland and Belmont. The latter spot sees the return of Bokeelia Island, who turned heads at Saratoga with an eye-popping run through the stretch when finishing second to Smiling John. There’s also a turf-sprint maiden special weight race for statebreds at Belmont and a maiden claimer at Santa Anita.

There are no stakes races, but there are six turf races overall, including a first-level allowance at Keeneland that looks competitive. The anchor leg also is on the green. It’s an optional claimer at nine furlongs at Santa Anita that features a full field, as do most of the races in the sequence.

The spacing looks great throughout the sequence, so players should be able to wait until just before post time to finalize their selections. But it’s always a good idea to put in default picks at the start of the contest to make sure you don’t get shut out.
