Fornatale: Larmey the Younger wins BCBC qualifying round

Email

There were several interesting storylines in Sunday's BCQualify.com round one contest on Sunday. All in all, 20 more players joined the group of 22 who qualified last week for the round two event to be held on May 31. From there, up to 12 players will win their full $10,000 Breders’ Cup Betting Challenge seats, plus a $500 travel allowance. There will be one final opportunity to advance to the May 31 round 2 tournament next Sunday, May 24.

The two-stage qualifying format is popular with players because it rewards consistency. As with most online contests, players must select one horse in each race to make a mythical $2 win-place bet on over 12 races. In a one-day event, contestants typically need to finish in the top 2.5 percent. But under these rules, players need to finish in or near the top 10 percent to advance in each round. The format won’t be utilized again until August. As a result, attendance for next week’s contest is expected to be strong.

The overall winner last weekend was Alex Larmey. Larmey, a former U.S. Army engineer whose hobbies include being a mixed martial arts fighter, picked three winners and added three additional collections. He got off to a great start using Total Immersion ($17.40 to place) in the first contest event, Churchill’s sixth race.

There was almost a great father-son story to report as Chris Larmey, Alex’s dad, was 22nd on Sunday, just missing the top 10 percent cut line by two spots and less than $4. The elder Larmey is well known in the contest world as an eight-time NHC qualifier and the head of the NTRA Players’ Committee.

Alex Larmey had also advanced an entry into round two the previous week. He is now one of six players with two entries to round two, the others being David Nelson, Michael McIntyre, and Kevin Geraghty from this week, and Ming Meyer and Eric Moomey from the previous week. They are all among the current favorites to grab the BCBC spots.

Nobody had a better weekend in the contest world than Gary Johnson. Johnson, the former trainer, won the Preakness Betting Challenge at Santa Anita. In addition to scoring in that live-bankroll event, where he turned a qualification on DRFQualify.com into over $50,000, Johnson also advanced an entry into round two. Johnson backed four winners in all, including The Best Glacier ($23.80 to win) in Woodbine’s sixth.

John Nichols, the head clocker at Churchill Downs, has been in the midst of a great run on the National Hanidcapping Championship tour. He also put an entry forward to round 2 on Sunday, running seventh overall on the strength of five winners, the longest of whom was also The Best Glacier. The Best Glacier also helped former NHC Tour champ Paul Shurman make his way into round two.
