Fornatale: Churchill Downs to host rich Derby Week contest

Email

Last week, Churchill Downs and Twinspires.com announced a new handicapping contest, the Kentucky Derby Betting Championship, to be run in conjunction with the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby on May 6-7 at Churchill Downs.

The contest, featuring a record $20,000 buy-in, is a live-bankroll tournament with a guaranteed prize pool of $250,000. That prize pool includes three entries each to the National Handicapping Championship and the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge.

Of that $20,000 buy-in, $15,000 will act as a live bank, with the additional $5,000 funding the prize pool.

“This is an exciting way for the top handicappers to be a part of the most exciting two minutes in sports,” said TwinSpires.com president Ted Gay.

Bet 20k to win 100k? This doesn't make any sense to me. If you have a 20% chance of winning the tourney, you break even! #insult

another bad decision by Churchill Downs....the quality of racing at the track has deteriated so bad in recent years (except for Derby week)...for that kind of buy in the prize pool should be at least 2 million

Remember, of that buy-in, $15K is live-bank -- ie, you can keep any portion of it that remains at the contest's end. I applaud them for trying something new and different. PTF

Hi, Christian. Of the $20,000 entry fee, $15,000 is live handle, and the results of those wagers are yours to keep regardless if you earn a placing. $5,000 is the entry fee that goes toward the $100,000 first prize. We hope to see you at Churchill Downs!
