First of Many Lists

Email

I've started trying to get organized about the next 6 1/2 weeks of racing leading up to the Breeders' Cup, and here's the first of what will likely be many lists: Below are the 29 scheduled U.S. Grade 1 stakes races between the start of Labor Day weekend and the two Cup Days, and the BC race (red for Friday, blue for Saturday)with which they most closely correspond:

28 of the 29 are official "Win and You're In" races (for whatever reason, the Clement L. Hirsch is not listed as one of the 57 WAYI races on the Breeders Cup website), meaning that the winners of those 28 Grade 1's all will get automatic starting berths if their connections want them.

The 11 G1 races being run at Belmont and Oak Tree Sept. 27 are more than twice as many as will be run on either of the Breeders' Cup cards. BC Friday has three -- the G1 Ladies' Classic (it hurts to type that name), the G1 F&M Turf and the G1 Juvenile Fillies, plus the ungraded F&M Sprint and Juvenile Fillies Turf. BC Saturday has five -- the G1 Classic, G1 Turf, G1 Mile, G1 Sprint and G1 Juvenile -- plus the ungraded Juvenile Turf, Dirt Mile, Turf Sprint and Marathon.

Of perhaps more immediate interest is the $63,136 pick-6 carryover when racing resumes tomorrow at Belmont. Four of the six races are scheduled for the grass, and the forecast is sunny. Here's the pre-scratch lineup:

Race 4: 3+ NY-bred $25k Maiden claimers -- 6f -- field of 13
Race 5: 3+ NY-bred AlwN1x -- 1 1/16-WT -- field of 10/2 AE's/1 MTO
Race 6: 3+ MdSpWt -- 6f-IT -- Field of 12/1 AE/3 MTO's
Race 7: 3+ Alw/N3x/OC $75k -- 7f-WT -- field of 12/1 AE
Race 8: 3+ Clm25000N2L -- 6f -- Field of 11
Race 9: 2F MdSpWt -- 1m-WT -- Field of 12/3 MTO's

Don't know yet whether I'll play. It seems like a tough and crowded lineup, and the very poorly-positioned finale includes five first-time starters, all from tough outfits (Albertrani, McLaughlin, Mott, Pletcher, Tagg.) But I suppose it won't hurt to take a look.

In response to Dan_C and steroid use in Dutrow's barn. Bear in mind Benny won the Golden Shaheen in March in Dubai, a venue where no drugs can be administered, including Lasix. He was not on Winstrol. BB and Kip were -- and the withdrawal from this steroid must be considerd a factor. In the case of BB, it looks as if the horse has gone through the withdrawal period. Kip should be fine by the BC. I'm sure you are aware that more trainers have ben using Winstrol. (Dutrow has been one of the few to acknowledge its use). It will be interesting to see how all horses perform on BC weekend.

In checking Big Brown's time for his 9/13 win on grass, I cannot determine on which course he ran. Equibase posted the track record of 1:49.6 (Greenery). BB ran a 1:47.41. Can you confirm? Thank you.

How can there be BC races that are ungraded?

Dear Steve, How many times are you going to tell us "I don't know if I'll play the Pick 6" In all due RESPECT wouldn't it be easier on you to say, "I'm not going to EAT tomorrow..LOL

Hi Steve, You know you will take a shot or at least help us out if you can. Thanks, Ralph

A nice list Steve. Particularly like the red/blue color choice with the election coming shortly after races. The Breeder's Cup will be upon us faster than we imagine. Know the blog is read around the world, but I've always been 95% directed to NYRA racing. As such I'm aggravated at the BC for the two year commitment to Santa Anita, and for the manner in which they've reportedly behaved in selection of the 2010 site. BC has basically given NYRA and east coast racing fans the flying arm. I guess I'll have to give in and fuel my fire, but there's part of me that would like to give the gesture right back.

Is anyone else wondering if the link with steriod testing and banishing has anything to do with: Big Brown flops since Preakness benny the Bull gets hurt Kip Deville runs 5th Anyone else just a little curoius on what to do with Dutrows big horses going into a steriod free Breeders cup?

Steve, Your G-1 list points out how important those races will be at SA on 9/27 over the synthetic track. The 'horse for course' theory will get plenty of attention this year.

Maybe its just a coincidence, but there seems to be a lot of F.+M. races on Breeders' Cup friday, and not too many on saturday. Maybe they can "mix" them up a bit.
