Looking forward to playing Thedamageisdone in the 10th race today. She was closing well at the end of her latest, when she met several of these same rivals, and she should get pace help. I'm using her with Paulsbourbonbaby (#11) and Double Desert (#12), but I'm also going to include Billysingssinatra (#2), on the advice of Monmouth track handicapper Brad Thomas, who is tough to resist when he's passionate about a runner. How passionate? Check out our "Happy Hour" segment on DRF.com, where we dissect today's 10th race.

It's hot in Jersey, but while it rained in some areas Oceanport was spared, so we're fast and firm for Sunday's action. Scratches changed the complexion of a couple of races, most notably the 9th, which lost four horses (#5 Eltheeb, #7 Gaither Draw, #9 All in No Outs and #10 Medal Round), but the most important scratch on the card may be that of Hung Jury (#5) in the 7th. That seems to greatly aid Purely Awesome (#3), a horse I'm trying to get home as the 2nd choice in the Pick 5.

Why is Youland 1/5? No one here seems to know, but someone apparently likes her very much. She opened up with an extra $10,000 in the win pool bet on her, and she's not really drifting all that much. Maybe it's a Brad Thomas fan? The track handicapper picked her on top. Maybe it's Brad himself? Either way, take a shot against her.

On my best behavior today with DRF's Mike Watchmaker here in the press box today. Watch is shooting some videos for the DRF.com website, and choose Monmouth for today's setting. Keep an eye out for the segments, which will be under the "Video" banner on the DRF.com home page.

Weather is clear, track is fast, train was late today, so pretty standard stuff. The races I'm most interested in are the 8th (Rhythm On Heir, #5, and Night Officer, #7) and the 9th (Special Exchange, #1), though nothing looks exceptionally strong, as this is a fairly lackluster card.

The main track is fast today but the turf course is yielding, and the only race that will be conducted on the grass is the 6th, the Crank It Up Stakes. We had some heavy rains blow through the area on Friday night, and with Haskell Day looming tomorrow track officials are taking no chances. Races one, eight and 10 will be run on the main track.

It's humid, mostly overcast, but dry in New Jersey, yet that seems certain to change. That's if the radar is correct, as the green/yellow/red blob that is moving left to right on the map appears to be on a collision course with the coast. Whether it passes over Oceanport is any handicapper's guess but I wouldn't be surprised to see us get at least some rain before the Pick 5 starts in race 6, so make your advance wagers with caution.

He was a remote 2nd as the favorite last time but that was not a favorable pace scenario, and he should get a better set-up this afternoon.

Even with the defections of Jack London and Rush Now the Long Branch Stakes, the 11th of 12 races on this card, should set up for a closer. The most logical horse is Rattlesnake Bridge, but Nacho Saint is a horse to consider strongly, at least underneath the likely favorite. At least. Nacho Saint made a nice middle move behind gate-to-wire winner Moonhanger two back and his latest, a two-turn sprint at Charles Town, was probably too short for him. And how well is trainer Kelly Breen going right now?

...but no one here can figure out why track officials didn't wait until we actually had some significant precipitation before taking the 8th and 10th races off the course. It looks like it's going to pour but we've only seen mist thus far. In fact, the main track is still listed as "Fast". There's no good reason the 8th couldn't have been run on the grass, even if they wanted to move the 10th off well in advance.

The main track and the turf course are both listed as "Good" today at Monmouth Park on a fairly warm but overcast day. Several people coming in today were talking about the prospects of rain but that's a regular possibility here in the summer. In fact, there were a couple of short blasts of intense rain yesterday but both times the sun came out and it was a great day otherwise. Yet, it was enough to keep the dirt and turf courses from being fast and firm today.

They're calling the main track "Fast" and the turf course "Good" for the start of the Independence Day card (Happy 4th!), which is somewhat of a surprise given the nearly day-long rain on Sunday. It's a relief to see they're on the grass, as this card could have really fallen apart if today's four tuf races were switched to the dirt.
