Activity at the Santa Anita stables was minimal at 5 a.m. Saturday. It was dark, after all.

But trainer Bill Spawr always starts early. His first set went to the training track at 4:45. The main track opened at 5.

The morning surface is fresh, one reason Spawr prefers to train early. That includes the big horse.

Amazombie was scheduled Saturday for his final workout before shipping to Churchill Downs for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Drill got hammered to 3-5 but finished second as Creative Cause ($5.80) turned the tables with a perfect-trip win in the mile and a sixteenth race that was the first route for both colts.

You thought Saturday was tough?

Del Mar expects $1 million to be wagered Sunday on the pick six, chasing a $145,934 carryover. “New money” usually is six to seven times the carryover amount.

The problem with Sunday’s sequence (races 5-10) is every race is difficult. That creates good gambling opportunites on a race-by-race basis, but stringing together six straight might be impossible. Here is a quick look, anyway.

Bettors are expected to add another $1 million to the pot. Looking for an inconspicuous single? The last three races offer possibilities.

Race 7 is a maiden-40 starter allowance sprint for fillies and mares, and if Cactus House runs back to her maiden win she can win as the 7-2 second choice on the morning line.

The turf rails were put up Friday at Del Mar, and longshot front-runners stole a pair. Is more of the same in store this weekend?

The turf rails were down the first seven days of racing, during which time not a single grass race at a mile, or a mile and a sixteenth, was won by the pacesetter. That was 15 races through Thursday, none won wire to wire.

But when the rails were put up Friday (seven feet), the profile changed immediately.

Jet Set Girl made the lead in race 3, slowed down the pace, and was gone at $19.60.

The main track on Thursday was not the same Polytrack from the first six days of the meet.

Speed was better Thursday than any time this meet.

The $18-20,000 claiming mare Malusita set a blazing pace in race 2, and won by more than five lengths.
The eight-race card Thursday at Del Mar appears logical, with legitimate favorites in races 5 and 7. The only drawback facing Gallatin’s Run and All Star Heart is betting. Both are listed at 5-2, which is about fair. The uneasy feeling is both might go shorter.

As for handicapping creativity on Thursday, three Del Mar races with price-horses merit consideration.

War Emblem was fast. The 112 Beyer he earned in his final Derby prep was seven points higher than the last-start figure of any in the field.

Comma to the Top, likely pacesetter this year, does not possess a combined pace-speed advantage. Comma to the Top earned a 97 Beyer last out, same as Midnight Interlude and a point below the 98’s earned by Archarcharch and Nehro.

Even that late, some still considered the Derby crop weak, and instead backed “all others” (No. 24) in KDFW pool 3. “All others” is anonymous. It is a bet on chaos.

It turns out KDFW pool 3 bettors who took 8.80-1 on No. 24 are getting all the best of it.

The low-takeout (14 percent) pick five that made its debut Thursday at Hollywood Park attracted a modest $103,291 pool.

Three winning favorites made it simple for 236 winning tickets. The 50-cent bet returned $263.55; there were 3,870 consolation payoffs (four winners) that returned $6.85.

Is it a good bet? You be the judge.

California recently hiked takeout to 23.86 percent for exotic wagers with three or more horses.

Under the standard takeout, the winning pick five Thursday would have paid only $233, compared to $263.

The ballot box opens Thursday, when the least expensive wager in California makes its debut on opening day of the Hollywood Park spring-summer meet.

California raised the exotic-wager takeout rate by a 10- to 15-percent margin Jan. 1 (from 20.68 cents per dollar, to 22.68 and 23.68). The cost went up, demand went down. Winter handle plummeted.

This occurred in the face of an arrogant attitude by some.

Stewards made the right call by letting the order of finish stand.

“If you’re unsure, don’t change it,” said another observer.

Steward Kim Sawyer voted to disqualify the Big ’Cap winner for causing interference at the top of the stretch.
Turbulent Descent (even-money in race 4), Caracortado (5-2 in race 9) and Twirling Candy (4-5 in race 10) are the most likely winners of the Santa Anita Oaks, Kilroe Mile and Big ’Cap.

But something happened Tuesday morning at Santa Anita that suggests he might have his hands full.

Trainer Bob Baffert had a plane to catch, so he worked three Big ’Cap starters early, after the 6:30 a.m. break.

First was Tweebster, five furlongs in 1:00.40. Ho, meet hum.

Then came Game On Dude. He worked in company, five furlongs in 1:00.40. It was a good work, nothing more.

It was cold Sunday morning at Santa Anita. The temperature at dawn hovered at about freezing.

Bundled from the chill, jockeys Joel Rosario and Rafael Bejarano arrived early at trainer John Sadler’s barn.

They had good reason for the 6:30 a.m. workout call. Rosario rides Twirling Candy in the Santa Anita Handicap on March 5; Bejarano may end up on Gladding. Both horses were scheduled for their final workout Sunday.
