Fair Grounds: Wide closers need not apply?

Email

Race 1 on a muddy Fair Grounds Saturday looked a lot like all the races on a muddy Fair Grounds Friday. The leader at the top of the stretch pulled clear, and nothing could make up any ground. That leader was Majhood, an 11-1 shot who seized command of the route claimer partway around the first turn (no, Majhood did not "make all,"as the strangely Euro-centric track annnouncer said at the finish), ran a fast 23.25-second quarter mile down the backstretch, and absolutely cruised to victory while sticking close to the fence. Clearly, one doesn't want to make concrete conclusions from a one-race sample, but combining what I saw Friday with this race, the thought is we could be in for a very front-endy day.
