Fair Grounds: Switching Gears surprises in featured 8th

Neither sharp last-out maiden-route winner, St. John's River or Harbor Fox, was the right horse for featured race 8, an N1X two-turn dirt allowance race for 3-year-old fillies. Instead it was 6-1 Switching Gears who battled back after being passed in midstretch by St. John's River to win going away. Switching Gears, from the Steve Margolis barn, had finished third two races back in a FG start under similar conditions, and apparently failed to handle the track at Oaklawn Park in her most recent race, turning in a totally dull performance. She was close to a slow early pace in this spot, which apparently gave her energy to fight back after being headed. Hard to say why Harbor Fox was 6-5, since she was once-started, and that as an main-track-only in an off-the-turf heat. Harbor Fox was away a little slowly, wide both turns, no factor.
