Fair Grounds: Slow-playing Monday

Email

The track has been dull for several days now, and if it has sped up at all today, it's only mildly. Race 1, a $7.5K N2L claimer, went in 1:13.53 for six furlongs. Race 2, for La-bred $15K maiden-claimers, went in 1:06.31 for 5.5 furlongs, that with a runaway winner. Congrats, by the way, to those savvy bettors who knocked Spicy World down to 1-5 late in the betting! I guess you can't criticize winning, but man, it takes more guts than I have to send in thousands on a low-level, second-time-starting maiden-claimer. Question, though: How did Zarb's Champion, 14-1 in the win pool, pay just $2.80 to show???

Spicy World stalked and pounced, while race 1 winner Of Gab led all the way. Of Gab's lone prior victory came at Sandy Downs, the racing pride of Boise, Idaho, in a maiden-special-weight with a purse of $1,000. I guess its fair to say this wasn't an especially strong heat for the class level.

The track is fast. No turf carded today. Temp 44, wind northwest (cross/head) 12-18 mph.
