Fair Grounds: Ready for Sat. stakes

No biases in play so far Louisiana Derby day. Sunny and warm-ish again, like yesterday, but unlike yesterday, there is significant wind. It's from the south, a cross-wind, blowing 10-14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph recorded at the airport. That south wind blows across the track, from the homestretch to the backstretch, and its effect was quite clearly evident in race 4, where the leaders in an La-bred maiden filly sprint required 24.60 seconds to complete the second furlong. Final time for six furlongs was 1:11.81, about what one would expect for these horses.

Moderate route pace in race 3, a two-turn turf N1X allowance, but favored Skipadate, eighth in the early going, rallied for a narrow win. Porter's Gate, last in the early going, moved up on the far turn, was third in the stretch, and ran down favored pace-pressing Southern Region to win just-completed race 5, a turf-sprint allowance. Another quick time, 1:03.15, after a course record at this 5.5-furlong distance yesterday.

Porter's Gate was live on the board early in the betting for race 5, and the live one in race 6, the first of today's stakes, the Duncan Kenner, is Cash Refund. Logical chalk sitting at 3-5 with 23 minutes to post, but barely any money in the pool yet.
