Fair Grounds: Quiet Temper rebounds in FG Oaks

Quiet Temper took all the late money in the FG Oaks: Apparently someone knew that she'd be ridden properly this time. After getting in a speed duel with herself in the Silverbulletday Stakes, and getting nipped on the wire by Jody Slew, Quiet Temper got a perfect pocket trip in the FG Oaks under Robby Albarado, and just edged pace-setting Champagne d'Oro to win the G2 Oaks. It was the kind of performance I had expected from her all meet, after her good win in the Delta Princess and a facile allowance-race score early this FG season. Give her, Albarado, and trainer Dale Romans credit, though: QT delivered when it counted.

Pletcher-trained Ailalea got hung wide from outside draw. Visavis broke through the gate pre-start, and backed off pace meekly. Third-time starting Seeking the Title wound up much farther behind the early pace than I expected; she ran all right rallying for dead-heat third with longshot bomber Sheer Beauty. Tony Dutrow-trained stretchout sprinter Mambo Fever had good position, but no stretch run.
Jody Slew, questionable to make the Oaks after suffering a minor injury in her stall last week, made no late impression this time.

So, do take note that every dirt race on this FG Oaks card was won by a horse on the lead or close to the pace, even when the pace was quick. Something to consider heading into tomorrow.
