Fair Grounds: No Refund necessary

EmailSpot-on tidbit from New Orleans Times-Picayune turf writer Bob Fortus this week: Namely, how can the Duncan Kenner, Fair Grounds' top sprint race, not be graded? The race I just watched was every bit a graded stakes - I have no doubt of that. Cash Refund was the pick here only because he was drawn on the outside of a five-horse field, and indeed, jock Brian Hernandez Jr. made the most of the draw. He let Euroears set the pace for a furlong-and-a-half or so, attacked into the turn, and then had Kensei, who stuck right with a hot pace, pinned down inside for the stretch run. It all worked, and Cash Refund a deserving winner in a meet-best 1:09.13 for six furlongs -- smoking. Kensei's connections had to be pleased with this excellent '10 comeback race. Right with the pace, and held stoutly to the finish. And Euroears never gave up, either, coming back on in the final three-sixteenths after losing position into the stretch to finish a close third.
