Fair Grounds: Dead rail on turf course

Email

The riders are avoiding the inner rail on grass like the plague, and there appears to be at work a significant outside bias on grass. But don't take it from me: Miguel Mena has won two grass races on the day, and he said after winning the Buddy Diliberto Handicap on Strike Again that "the turf seems to be pretty soft on the inside." Unfortunately, there's just one more grass race this afternoon, the upcoming Pago Hop Stakes. Twenty-six minutes to post there, and the 4-1 morning line on Kitty Love, the Jonathan Sheppard-trained fourth-time starter, is looking a little light, since she's even money right now. Drawn outside and has late-running style, though jockey Rosie Napravnik did not seem to be aware of the bad turf rail in the Dilberto, in which she kept Amazing results close to the fence for much of the trip. Lesson learned, one assumes.
