Fair Grounds: Cloudy thousands

Email

Okay, so the Sunshine Millions proceedings on both coasts will dominate the attention of the national handicapping audience today, but hey, it's cloudy in New Orleans, and they are running for literally thousands of dollars this afternoon.

Five races into this card. Conditions: Cloudy, 64 degrees. West wind (tail-wind stretch) 5-8 mph. Main track fast, turf good, turf rail 10 feet out.

One grass race so far was won by a 9-2 closer, but not the widest closers. Still, the top 3 all were well off the fence -- a strong recent trend on the FG lawn.

See no biases on dirt, but the main track seems capable of producing quick times. Race 1, a starter-allowance with a claiming option, saw heavily favored Hey Smarty up late to edge pace-setting Overbid, who hung very tough. One mile 70-yard time of 1:42.93 was among the fastest of the meet.
