'Dude' Back on Track

Email

GAME ON DUDE bounced back from a disappointing defeat as the Breeders' Cup Classic favorite to post a strong gate-to-wire score in the Grade 3 Native Diver Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park.  Trained by Bob Baffert, Game On Dude may be the best nine-furlong horse in North America (7-5-1-0 record) and his most powerful asset is his excellent early foot.  Game On Dude can sustain his speed over a distance of ground and that gives him a natural advantage over late-running types like RICHARD'S KID.  Game On Dude didn't break on top in the Native Diver - that honor went to NONIOS - but Mike Smith would have none of rating and he ushered Game on Dude through a narrow opening on the rail to assume command.  From there, the pace was pedestrian and Game On Dude had plenty left in the stretch to rebuff Nonios' second challenge.

The 3-year-old runner-up was very game and may attempt to kick off next season in the Strub Series at Santa Anita.  Richard's Kid's usual strong late flurry was compromised by the lack of pace, but it would have been nice to see him give some sort of run.  Perhaps he's getting a bit long in the tooth, but he also may want more ground to work with.  He deserves one more chance.

Baffert has an ambitious outlook for Game On Dude's 2013.  The immediate goal is the San Antonio Stakes on February 3 followed by the Santa Anita Handicap, Californian Stakes, Hollywood Gold Cup, Pacific Classic, Awesome Again and Breeders' Cup Classic.

The thoroughbred game needs horses like Game On Dude, popular iron horses that don't duck a fight.  Racing fans can get behind these runners because they compete more than a handful of times a year.  Of course, the only reason Game On Dude's connections are even considering running him as a 6-year-old is because he is a gelding.  If he was an intact horse, chances are that Game On Dude would have been whisked off to stud by now.

And racing fans would have missed some brilliant performances.

*I was really taken with BAHAMIAN SQUALL's victory in the Sunshine State Stakes for Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park.  A 3-year-old son of Gone West, Bahamian Squall aggressively attacked an opening along the inside on the far turn, won a tussle with two pace foes and drew away in nice fashion.  Trained by David Fawkes, Bahamian Squall looks set for a run in the Florida Sunshine Millions Sprint next month.

Hey Dan,
I've seen the sire name el nino pop up a couple times and just wondering if you could post his pps.
Thanks,
Aaron

EL NINO's past performances are available at the bottom of this blog post.  His dam is a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Boston Harbor.  El Nino began his stud career at Swifty Farms in Indiana and is now standing in Australia.

Dan, or anyone:
I've been looking for an updated chart of Track Takeout rates, but the most current information I can find are for 2011.
Is there some site that has more current information?
Thanks!

Dan or anyone:
Any information or guesses on what The Lumber Guy, a NY Bred from the rather parochial Mike Hushion barn is doing putting in works at Hollywood? Put in a :48.1 5th of 45 for 4f this AM out there I see...could this one have changed trainers or is he pointing at a certain race out there?
Keith L.

THE LUMBER GUY will prepare for the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on December 26 under the tutelage of trainer Neil Drysdale. He will return to New York in the spring and be reunited with Mike Hushion at that point.  The reason he is in Southern California is because the owner prefers to race there instead of in South Florida during the winter.

I reserve the right to approve or deny any entries.

I know that there is a time issue for some of you, but let's remember why we began the HandiGambling races in the first place. The goal was to share ideas on why we like these horses, and why we're betting them the way we are. I'm not asking for a novel, but if you could spare a sentence or two outlining your handicapping angles, and thought processes about wagering, it would be appreciated.
Best of luck to all.

Be back Friday for the HandiGambling analysis and some quick weekend stakes thoughts.

HGFG $8 superfectga 2 // 9 // 4-5-11-16 // 4-5-11/16 // 4-5-11/16 = $96 Had to look at this race from a different angle. Jockey change on Jeff and the internal fractions of his previous races shows me that he will go to the lead. Whether he holds it during the long stretch is the question. The rest look like closers and I wish I could have added more but with the bomb plays others are making I could only manage a $8 dollar wager on the super. TurfRuler

HG I don't want a three year old in here on this off the turf route. So, focusing on the best of the older runners, I'll take the #16 MTO AE with Rosie for Larry Jones here as the main choice, and add the #4 Dew Drop Inn and the never ran on dirt but works look pretty solid #8 Artilery as my go to players. Wager: $40 Exacta Keys: #16 over #4,#8 ($80) $10 Tri Key: #16/#4,#8/#4,#8 ($20) $100 total of Dan Dollars Good luck, folks! Keith L.
